  2. Booth Luce‚Äîsaying something to the effect that 
  3. the media ecology of cultures probably need to be 
  4. managed in a systematic way‚Äî and the term 
  5. struck me as very useful, since ecology was used 
  6. to mean the study of environments and how 
  7. environments can be healthy and become toxic and 
  8. so on. I thought that his putting the term media in 
  9. front of ecology suggested in a forceful way that 
  10. people studying media were not just studying 
  11. machines and how they work, but the interaction 
  12. between the structure and form of machines and 
  13. the human sensorium. This gave a special kind of 
  14. meaning to the phrase symbolic environment
